What is assisted living?

Assisted living communities offer housing, meals, and hands-on help with the activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, medication management, and getting around. Residents keep their own private apartment and as much independence as they can.

It's the right fit when living alone has become unsafe or exhausting but round-the-clock skilled nursing isn't needed. Most communities include restaurant-style dining, housekeeping, transportation, activities, and staff on hand 24 hours a day.

Who it’s a good fit for

  • Needs help with one or more daily activities like bathing, dressing, or medications
  • Is safe with staff nearby but doesn't need 24/7 skilled nursing
  • Would enjoy meals, housekeeping, and a built-in social life
  • Has family caregivers who are stretched past what's sustainable

Assisted Living questions, answered

What's the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?

Assisted living offers non-medical help with daily activities in an apartment-style setting. Nursing homes (skilled nursing facilities) provide 24/7 medical care from licensed nurses for people with complex medical needs.

Does Medicare pay for assisted living?

No. Medicare does not cover assisted living room and board. Families usually pay privately, through long-term care insurance, VA benefits, or, in some states, Medicaid waiver programs for those who qualify.

How do I know when it's time for assisted living?

Common signs include falls or close calls, missed medications, weight loss or an empty fridge, isolation, and caregiver burnout. Our advisors help you weigh it honestly, and we'll tell you if it isn't time yet.
